CHAPTER 25

Elliot

“Oh, did we forget to mention it on the call?” Ezra jests.

“You absolutely did not mention it,” he says, pinching the bridge of his nose and standing up. He begins to pace nervously. “This doesn’t make any sense.”

“It doesn’t, I agree,” Soren says. “But something weird is going on. There’s more.”

“What else could there possibly be?” He looks around, completely bewildered.

“There is dark magic in Ghost, mate,” Soren says solemnly.

“In what way?” Rivien asks cautiously.

“We aren’t sure yet,” he responds. “The throne didn’t offer any additional information.” The attendant comes in with the wine and looks around nervously.

“Thanks, Gerald,” Ezra says. The portly man bows nervously. “Is there something else?”

“There are reports of a large flock of crows near the gate, milord,” Gerald responds. He wipes a bead of sweat off of his brow. We all look at Rivien.

“What?” He says with a huff. “They aren’t mine.”

“Then whose are they?” I ask.

“Someone with dark magic, I would presume,” he drawls, leisurely taking a sip of wine from a glass he’s procured.

“Gerald?” I call out.

“Yes, my lady?”

“Could you please find out how long the crows have been present and a general estimate of how many there are?”

“Yes, my queen. Is there anything else I can assist you with?” I look at Ezra before answering.

“Dad? Can we go ahead and call for him?”

“Of course, babe,” he says.

I turn back to Gerald. “Please prepare a room for a guest.” I look at Kit, who subtly nods at me.

“As you wish, my queen.” Gerald bows and walks out of the door. Ezra’s Father, John, will be invaluable to our issues with the resistance and the threat we face. After his many years in the military, he’s a force to be reckoned with—even being completely human.

“Might I ask who the guest is?” Rivien asks, plucking another grape from the platter. He runs a hand through his raven strands, creating the ultimate bedhead look.

“My father,” Ezra says. “He’s incredibly gifted in strategy.”

“And what species is he?” Rivien asks.

“Human,” I say with a broad smile. “He’s human.” Rivien promptly spits out his wine.

“You’re bringing a human? To Hell?” He responds shellshocked. “The only one who does that is Daire.”

“Yep,” I respond. “Let’s open a portal, yes? Rivien, we’ll be back in a few minutes.”

“Absolutely not. I think I should like to join you on this little field trip,” he says, flicking a nonexistent piece of dust off his coat.

I roll my eyes, “Sure thing. Might I ask why?”

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been Earth-side,” he shrugs. “I also want to see what sort of household could turn out this dimwit.” He helpfully nods towards Ezra.

Ezra rolls his eyes. “The same one that churned out your future mate, asshole.” Soren snickers and I swear I saw Kit’s lip twitch upward. Kit has been a closed book since he’s joined our little merry band of misfits. He watches and waits, ever the sentinel and protector. I crave to know more about his past life, but I’m not sure it’s a welcome conversation.
